Breadfruit is a very famous vegetable (or fruit) in Goa (Western part of Indian). I know of many people who absolutely love eating this. It is commonly known as neer panas in Goa (India).
You can find it in any local market.
Due to its high nutrition value, one can have breadfruit regularly without the chance of any side effect. It is also known as ‘Bakri Chajhar’ in Hindi, ‘Seema Panasa’ in Telugu, ‘Nirphanas’ in Marathi, ‘Irppla’ in Tamil, ‘Kada Chakka’ in Malayalam, ‘Gujjekai’ in Kannada, and ‘Nirphanas’ in Marathi. Breadfruit has many health benefits, and these benefits are evident on skin and the hair.
Breadfruit is high in carbohydrates and a good source of antioxidants, calcium, carotenoids, copper, dietary fiber, energy, iron, magnesium, niacin, omega 3, omega 6, phosphorus, potassium, protein, thiamine, vitamin A and vitamin C.
The consistency and flavor of bread fruit can be compared to that of a potato. It’s kind of tasteless however it can suck in flavors, such as marination and spice blends so well, that it makes a great vegan & gluten-free healthy food option/ snack or a side dish with a meal.
Let’s check my recipe for breadfruit fries.
Ingredients
1 Small Breadfruit
2 Tablespoons Turmeric Powder
1 Tablespoon Chili Powder
Salt as per taste
1/2 Tablespoon Ginger Garlic Paste
Semolina while frying (optional)
Apply lil oil to your palms as well as knife before cutting it.
Next, Start with peeling the Breadfruit, Discard the fruit core. The fruit will change color, that’s ok.
Cut it into thin slices
Place it into a container
Add all the ingredients mentioned above and mix well.
Marinate it for 15 minutes or longer
Next, heat some cooking oil in a pan and once hot add the marinated slices.
Fry on each side for 5 minutes or until both sides are golden brown and a bit crisp.
You can even bake or grill it. We prefer it when shallow fried, it tastes really yum.
Serve it as a side dish, goes well with simple daal and steamed rice.
You can also make sabzi with this vegetable or fruit, My mom makes curry of coconut masala with this breadfruit and some shrimps in it, shall post recipe for that soon.
Hope you liked my simple recipe.
